【摘要】:Oneofthefundamentalobjectivesofmicrostructuralexaminationofmanufacturedmaterials,especiallyplasticsandpolymers,istogainamorecompleteunderstandingoftherelationshipsbetweenthemanufacturingprocesses,themicrostructureandtextureofthematerial,andtheproduct''sperformance(thatis,physical,optical,ormechanicalproperties,orcombinationthereof).Undernearlyallconditions,theproperselectionandpreparationofthespecimenareofmajorimportance.Becauseofthewiderangeofavailableequipment;physical,chemical,andmechanicalpropertiesofmaterials;andthepersonalelement,specimenpreparationisanartbaseduponscientificprinciples.However,likemetallographicspecimenpreparation,certainmethods,practices,andprocedurescanbeusedtoroutinelyproduceacceptablequalityplasticandpolymericspecimensformicrostructuralexamination.Acceptablequalitymeans:Theobservedmicrostructureisfreeofthermal,mechanical,andchemicalalterations,artifacts,damage,ordefectsresultingfromthespecimenpreparationprocess.Asurfacefinishappropriateforthemicroscopicaltechniquestobeused.Themicrostructureisreproduciblydisplayedforagivenspecimen.Themounting,sectioning,grinding,andpolishingproceduresinthisguidemayintroducethermal,mechanical,andchemicalstressesonthematerialbeingpreparedformicrostructuralexamination.Thus,knowledgeofthematerial''sphysical,mechanical,andchemicalpropertiesisofimportanceinselectingthemostappropriatetechnique(s)torevealitstruemicrostructureandtominimizethetotalnumberofstepsneededtoproducehighqualitypolishedspecimens.Thegeneralguidelinespresentedbelowwillneedtobemodifiedforeachtypeofplasticorpolymertobeprepared.TableX1.1presentsgeneralproceduresforpreparingplasticsandpolymers.TablesX1.2-X1.5presentproceduresforpreparingfourpolymerswithverydifferentmechanicalproperties.1.1Thisguidecoversrecommendedproceduresandguidelinesforthepreparationofplasticandpolymericspecimensformicrostructuralexaminationbylightandelectronmicroscopy.1.2Thisguideisapplicabletomostsemi-rigidandrigidplastics,includingengineeringplastics.Thisguideisalsoapplicabletosomenon-rigidplastics.1.3Theproceduresandguidelinespresentedinthisguidearethosewhichgenerallyproducesatisfactoryspecimens.Thisguidedoesnotdescribethevariationsintechniquesrequiredtosolveindividualproblems.1.4Manydetaileddescriptionsofgrindingandpolishingofplasticsandpolymersareavailable(1-7).1.5Thisstandarddoesnotpurporttoaddressallofthesafetyconcerns,ifany,associatedwithitsuse.Itistheresponsibilityoftheuserofthisstandardtoestablishappropriatesafetyandhealthpracticesanddeterminetheapplicabilityofregulatorylimitationspriortouse.
